Have you ever wondered why the sticky pad mouse traps were invented? (Slow starvation for a mouse..)
Have you ever wondered why the little "container traps" were invented? ( Same slow death - and the smell!)
Even the traditional mouse trap that snaps leaves a mouse to slowly die and smell up your home until you find it was sprung ....
A carpenter friend of mine from Wilton showed me the BEST mousetrap in the world! It is humane, clean, not smelly, easy to set up, and you don't need to look at it daily. There are only two times it doesn't work well, - in the super cold, the water freezes, and in the extreme heat, - the peanut butter gets moldy and needs to be changed. Here in Wilton CT 06897 we have those extremes...
The parts are very simple -
a bucket
a drill
1/2" rod 18" long
two water or soda bottles
some tape (packaging tape is strong)
some peanut butter
water
chlorox
The bucket must be a good 18 inches deep and at least a foot wide. Use a drill with a bit that will make a hole 1 1/2 inches wide, and drill a hole on each side 3/4 of the way up the bucket on opposite sides. Cut the water or soda bottles in half, and join them with tape to have two mouths at opposite ends. Pour 50% water and 50% chlorox into bucket halfway up. Coat your bottle lightly with peanut butter and slip the dowel through the bottle and through each hole in the bucket.
Place this bucket near a wall in your garage or attic, where a mouse could climb onto the rod with ease.
The incredible thing is that the mouse will crawl in, spin off into the water, drown quietly in seconds, and then within 24 hours be completely disintegrated to nothing because of the chlorox! No smell, no picking up a mouse with your hands - and put it where? YUCK!! No exposure to ticks, fleas, etc.
Is that cool? I think I trapped approximately 30-40 mice here in Wilton last spring. Maybe more .... who knows? I didn't look every day!
